I've just begun laying down several new songs in my home studio and it's so exciting and refreshing to be back in the creative realm... I'm documenting nearly every step so be sure to keep an eye on upcoming videos for exclusive download like the one I just launched today entitled "First New Song 'White Out' In Progress." It's a tedious process of laying down a scratch track of the instrumental part first to a metronome/click track – that way everything stays in time that will added to the song in the near future. I then lay down a scratch main vocal track and import the audio into my new favorite studio software, Ableton Live. Here I can create some very cool percussive sequencing to really bring the groove/feel of the song to live. That in itself can take many hours but it's worth the effort and in some cases, I'll even re-record the instrumental and/or main vocal tracks I initially recorded to better sync with the new groove. Then, I start to create and record vocal harmony parts which can become very layered and involved. Some parts are even doubled – the same part sung twice on two separate tracks and than later played together within the final harmony arrangement. It's not uncommon for me to accumulate anywhere from 4-12 vocal harmony tracks in addition to the main vocal track because I am a bit of a harmony whore if you haven't noticed ; ) You'll get a better feel of this in the latest video as I'm recording a harmony to a main scratch track in this one on a new song I'm calling "White Out" – at least that's what I'm calling it for now.
Cheers!
