Thank You

I tend to feel the most gratitude for things in the aftermath of experiencing them, and that's likely why I woke up this morning feeling all of my feelings :) Holidays bring such a flurry of activity that it's often difficult to stop and reflect in the heat of the moment (or the heat of the oven)...

Yesterday, Glen and I had a quiet Thanksgiving for two here in LA. We went to a matinee screening of the new Pixar movie Coco which pays homage to the importance of family, tradition, and music – all in one beautifully colorful, imaginative film. I never leave a Pixar movie with dry eyes, but this one particularly hit home for me. It was a beautiful story about what matters most in life and I highly recommend it for folks of all ages & cultures!

We made a collaborative turkey dinner after the film, drank lots of wine throughout the evening, and watched old episodes of Will & Grace (because we are still on cloud nine after the live taping of Will & Grace we went to on Tuesday)!

But then morning came, and it was back to the realities of life. It's so easy to fall back into the vicious cycle of life's challenges and upsets. For me, it's always worrying about money and how the future will unfold. The older I get, the further behind I feel on my hopes and dreams. It's too easy to default back again to these type of thoughts and self-expectations – and I know I'm not alone in that.

Today, I urge you to keep riding that wave of gratitude – today and every day. Thanksgiving reminds me of how fortunate my life has been, but I need to take mindful action every day to keep myself in the flow of gratitude. For the last six months, I've implemented gratitude into my morning ritual and it has made all of the difference with my health and overall happiness.

Here's what my "Daily Five-Minute Journal" looks like if you want to try it out yourself:

I am grateful for:

1.
2.
3.

What would make today great?

1.
2.
3.

Daily affirmations. I am...

1.
2.
3.

How could I have made yesterday better?

1.
2.
3.

Three (3) wins yesterday:

1.
2.
3.

It's quick and easy, but an incredibly effective way to start the day with the right mindset. It often saves me from spiraling over things I can't control and reminds me of how lucky I am in so many ways.

So thank you for being a Gregory Douglass patron. Your ongoing, monthly support means the world to me because it allows me to do what I love for a living. I am so blessed to have all of your support and encouragement. I have so much to be grateful for and I wish you lots of love and appreciation as well – today and every day!

Cheers,

Gregory

PS. In case you missed it, here's what we did on Tuesday... Only in LA!

Halloween 2017

Everyone back east has already seen my Edward Scissorhands, but Glen Nadeau and I took the west coast by storm last night! We've heard so much about the Halloween Carnival in West Hollywood, so we decided to repurpose old costumes and join the festivities :) Glen's giraffe got a fresh, west-coast look, and Edward was in good company all night...

Cheers!

Facebook Live Web Concert Replays

In case you missed my "10 Days To 100 Patrons" pledge drive, I just wrapped up a string of five (5) Facebook live web concerts to celebrate the campaign! I ended the campaign with 61 patrons (which surpassed my "halfway" goal of 50 patrons), so I'll happily call that a successful pledge drive!

Every day of the pledge drive I honored a different album from my discography in chronological order. My forthcoming Live From The Chapel live album will make album #10, so I thought it would be fun to pay homage to each of my 10 albums over the course of the 10-day campaign. As such, I created a different set list for each of the five (5) web concerts, consisting of songs from two different albums per concert. I pulled out songs I hadn't played in a long time, and it was so much fun to make each concert so unique. If you missed any of them, the concert replays are below...

As you may already know, monthly patronage over at Patreon is an ongoing thing, so it's not too late to become a patron yourself! I'm in the home stretch with wrapping up my forthcoming Live From The Chapel project and will be releasing it soon as a live album and live performance video, and patron support makes all the difference in getting me to the finish line... You can learn more at: https://www.patreon.com/gregorydouglass.

50 Years Young in Cape Cod

The lovely and exquisite Yo Yo Mo (Monique Citro) celebrated her 50th birthday last week, so Glen and I joined her in Cape Cod for a week of fun in the sun! Mo decided to rent a house near Provincetown with a group of about seven of us. It was a memorable week "away from it all” – and we had a gay old time!

If you haven’t experienced the wonders of Provincetown yet, I highly recommend it. It’s a magical little beach town with so much to love. We went to some drag shows (shout-out to the hilarious Dina Martina!), went dancing at, and had some of the best food I’ve had in years. We even encountered a whole herd of seals at Head of the Meadow beach in Truro. It was my first time flying Cape Air as well. It was a short 20-minute plane ride in a tiny "puddle jumper" from Boston to Provincetown with a stunning view of the cape.

It was strange not to play any music with my favorite cellist, but it was nice to have a legitimate vacation with each other. As Mo would say, “I love her more than my luggage” – and I’m thrilled we got to celebrate with her in style!

An Evening With Paula Cole

I was fortunate enough to see Paula Cole the other night here at McCabe’s – a great little venue in Santa Monica, just ten minutes from where I live. It was the third time I’ve seen Paula perform live, and the first time I realized what an incredibly underappreciated live performer she is.

I was just at McCabes a month ago to support my longtime friend and musical mentor, Anais Mitchell, when I noticed that Paula would be performing soon after. I marked my calendar so I could get tickets, but before I knew, it snuck up on me and I hadn’t gotten tickets yet!

Sold out (sigh). Well, that’s what I get for waiting too long. I believe there’s a recurring theme in that lesson, but I digress.

I’ve performed at McCabes myself a couple times in the last two years I’ve lived out here in Los Angeles with the exquisite Mary Fahl. For some unfathomable reason, McCabes doesn’t permit local support or “openers” of any kind for the headliners they feature, so I was only able to back Mary up with vocal harmonies during both her shows there. I could go on a separate rant entirely about the ethical responsibility of today’s more established artists and venues, and how they should be helping support the future sustainability of music by encouraging supporting acts, rather than excluding emerging artists from such opportunities – but once again, I digress.

I’m deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to perform with Mary Fahl, and McCabes is no exception. It’s a wonderful “listening room” to perform in, and even better to experience such intimate and memorable shows from the audience.

After I missed the boat on Paula Cole tickets, I decided to email the general email at McCabes and ask them to let me know if any last-minute tickets became available. Couldn’t hurt, right? I reminded them who I was – that I had performed at their lovely venue a couple times with Mary in the past – but no response.

The next morning, I noticed an email from (wait for it)... Paula Cole herself.

Greg,

If you would like to come to my show tomorrow 7/7 in Carlsbad or Friday in Santa Monica 7/8 please let me know and I'll put you on the guest list.

Warmly,
Paula.

I was amazed, and simply blown away. I had met her briefly twice before over the last ten years after each show I saw (with a CD of mine in hand each time as a gift for her of course). I also helped fund her Kickstarter campaign last year for an album of jazz standards she’s about to release, and offered my services as a backing vocalist (for free) at the time as additional support if she was in need of any harmonies. She responded graciously to my offer and said some really encouraging words about my voice, which I very much appreciated. I’m guessing the folks at McCabe’s went ahead and forwarded on my inquiry about her show to her directly, but I’m still not certain how this came to be. Either way, I’m amazed at the love and care she showed me in return, and I was so honored to be her guest.

It’s this kind of attention and appreciation for fan support that makes all the difference these days. My fans and patrons are the backbone of my creative sustainability, and the close nature of our relationships mean everything to me. As an independent artist, it’s essential to have this type of musical family dynamic, but as an artist as established as Paula Cole, it’s not always the case. There are so many established artists today that still have great barriers between them and their fanbase, but those who are wiser know better – and barriers are not the same as boundaries.

It became obvious from this email and from her open-hearted stage banter during the show that Paula Cole knows better than most established artists how important her true fans are to the sustainability of her career now. She has embraced the world of crowdfunding, she’s touring much more intimate venues, and she’s even guest-listing her fans when it seems like the right thing to do.

Yet I never hear people talking about Paula Cole when it comes to incredible live performers. She may be greatly misjudged by the softer nature of some of her bigger hits like “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?” or “I Don’t Want To Wait,” but she officially has my vote as the most dynamic vocalist I’ve ever seen live. You just have to see her to appreciate what she’s capable of.

She’s in her fifties now – and while her graying middle-aged suburban hairdo might tell a different story on the outside, she is just as fiercely talented as she was when she was in her twenties. It’s been twenty years since she released her biggest commercial album This Fire – all songs she wrote in her twenties – so she’s been actively touring her new live album This Bright Red Feeling in honor. Just as the case in the live album, she performed every song from This Fire live at McCabes from beginning to end with a trio (drummer, guitarist, and Paula on piano). I was amazed how well such a minimalistic trio on a tiny stage pulled off such an enormous record. They sounded ten times their size, and the music truly transcended the intimate space.

Paula’s vocals were outstanding. There wasn’t a single note that she compromised from the original album – and as a fellow powerhouse vocalist, these were challenging songs to sing even when I was singing them in high school at the top of my singing game. I was certain the 50-year-old Paula wouldn’t be singing those songs in their original form, but she did – often even above and beyond some of the most challenging of notes. Her energy was huge and infectious, and the show was flawless. I hadn’t felt so inspired after a live show since… My twenties.

I snapped the picture above with her after the show. I handed her my latest album My Hero, The Enemy, and reminded her of how important her music has been in my life and the development of my own music over the years. I also thanked her again for her generosity in putting me on her guest list. She gave me a warm hug after, and then I went on my way with a renewed sense of hope for the humanity in people.

So here’s my advice to you – go see Paula Cole live :)

Cheers,

-Gregory

But why is this more beneficial to artists than fans actually paying for the music you ask? Because building new exposure and keeping our current email lists up-to-date is even more essential for the longterm sustainability of our music. Staying in touch with our fans allows us to make direct announcements about new shows in their area, new projects were working on, and new reasons why we love them so much.

An Evening With Danielle LaPorte

My heart is full after seeing the exquisite Danielle LaPorte speak last night here in Los Angeles. Her poetic insight was a warm bath for the soul, and it was such a treat for Glen and I both to meet her in person finally.

I've been spreading the gospel of Reverend LaPorte for years now. Though it's not easy to label her and all the good she contributes to the world – author, spiritual teacher, crusader of truth, creative alchemist are a few terms that come to mind. In her own words, “I’m in the make-your-life-better industry.” In short, she’s my kind of wellness guru :)

AGAPE Spiritual Center was the last stop on her White Hot Truth book tour – her third book to date, following the awe-inspiring Firestarter Sessions and The Desire Map.

As people were piling in, they were greeted to hand bracelets that read “You’re so hot,” and handed two copies of the new book White Hot Truth – one for them and one to give away. I thought this was a brilliant and generous promotional tactic which certainly made the $50 per person admission worthwhile. Once we got to our seats, we noticed their were cards on top of each chair, waiting to be turned over. They were different “truth bomb" cards from Danielle’s signature #TruthBomb decks – little nuggets of wisdom that are like fortune cookie readings, only more profound.

I noticed Danielle standing causally in the back before things got under way, having a conversation with someone. I didn’t want to be “that guy” to disrupt upon her pre-show mojo, but I figured she wouldn’t be out in the open if she wasn’t open to connecting beforehand. So I approached her with confidence. She looked at me as if she knew who I was, trying to put a name to the face. I said, “Hi, I’m Gregory Douglass. We’ve emailed a few times over the years.” Before I could finish my sentence, her face lite up and she said, “Gregory! Of course, it’s so nice to finally meet you!” She smiled widely and wrapped her arms around me as though we were longtime friends, and I was amazed. I had emailed her some links to my music and a bit of writing encouragement a few times over the years, but I certainly didn’t expect her to remember me. “Is your man here?” she asked. She knew I had a man? “Yes! And he’s adorable,” I replied, to which she laughed in her signature Danielle LaPorte cackle that is so infectious. “I’ll introduce you both after,” I said. Then she looked at me intimately in the eyes with a moment's pause and said, “I’m so glad you came."

She took to the stage with eloquent poise, addressed a full house of mostly women, and began the night with some elegant mantras. The poetic nature of her words is the defining aspect of Danielle in comparison to other “light workers” in her industry. Her wisdom just washes over you, and her authenticity seals the deal for every word spoken.

The majority of the evening was fueled by questions and stories from the audience and Danielle’s take on various topics. There was a lot of anger being (rightfully) addressed over the gender inequality and patriarchy that is currently poisoning our country, which inspired me to get up and speak. My recent trip to Sedona had this fresh on my mind, so I wanted to share a bit about my own experiences growing up as a gay man, being raised by mostly women, not having any healthy male role models, and even channeling my creativity from a dominantly “female” perspective. I wanted these women to know that I truly felt their pain, and what a mind-fuck it was to be a white male in physical form, struggling with these injustices myself – that I was also in need of healing from my battle with the masculine realm. I hoped my perspective might lift the conversation to a more internal, spiritual sense of gender-identity – acknowledging the yin and yang of our shared experiences.

One woman came up to me after and thanked me for all that I shared. I could feel her genuine gratitude, and it was enough to feel like my audience contribution made a difference.

My husband Glen and I waited in line to get our books signed and had some lovely conversations while we waited. We finally reached the front of the line about 20 minutes later and I introduced “my man” to Danielle. There were more hugs, and she thanked me for speaking up during the talk. We snapped some glamour shots together and had one more goodbye-for-now hug.

It was an unforgettable evening and the highlight of 2017 for me thus far. It was also another lesson in humility and the power of connection. You never know the impression you can truly have on a person, and you never know when magic will happen.

Cheers,

"Running Behind" by VVS Intuitive Songwriting Group

Every year VVS caps their academic year off with something they call Project Period, which offers every VVS student a chance to learn, create and participate in various projects that challenge each students creative potential above and beyond even their own expectations. I was continually inspired by my Intuitive Songwriting group throughout our time together. Each student created an original new song of their own, as well as an original new song we co-wrote together as a group.

The videos playlist below captured student's individual songs and our group written song titled "Running Behind," which was initially inspired by a deep group discussion about Chris Cornell's recent passing.

I can't wait to watch these kids thrive beyond their high school years!

So if you’ve been wondering what on earth I’m actually saying in the songs I’ve sung over the years, than this is the book for you :) It’s here just in time for the holidays, and might be the perfect gift for any Gregory Douglass fans you know of (or for your own coffee table). And if you pre-order an autographed copy before Nov. 15, 2016 you’ll get 20% off…

Where Did The Music Go? is a collection of my complete discography thus far – nine (9) studio albums worth of poetry in song from 1998 - 2016. It's an ode to nearly two decades of songs about love, loss, truth, and transformation, and it’s my way of honoring the emotional journey of a lifetime and 18 years of recording albums independently. Piecing this collection together has been a labor of love for me, and I hope it will help you feel a little less alone in this world.

There are three options available:

The hardcover lyric book with complete digital discography

The hardcover lyric book-only

The digital lyric book with complete digital discography

The complete digital discography comes with all nine (9) albums, as well as bonus EPs & singles that have been recorded over the years. And again, if you pre-order an autographed copy before Nov. 15, 2016 you’ll get 20% off, so happy holidays from me to you!

Thanks for your ongoing support!

Yours in music,

Gregory

For My Cousin Anthony

Today, my fathers side of the family is celebrating the life of my cousin, Anthony Lowe. I’m still processing the shocking, sudden nature of his passing. It’s one of those times when being so far away from family is hard to swallow, but I’m certainly with them in spirit. Anthony was a few years younger than me, and gone way too soon. Out of respect for my family, I will leave his story untold for now because there is still so much to process. I can only take comfort in knowing that he is finally released from the pain of his circumstances – so here’s to my cousin, my childhood friend… RIP, Anthony.

Music At Work - Steady In Your Care (New Song Lyrics)

Music At Work offers an exclusive, ongoing sneak-peek into new songs on the horizon. All song titles and lyrics are subject to change, evolve, or disappear entirely over time, but I want to share some of the beginning stages of the creative process with you in real-time.

Here are lyrics from a new song in development with the working title “Steady In Your Care.” It’s a very Gregory Douglass-certified piano ballad that might even make Patty Griffin proud ;)

Steady In Your Care
by Gregory Douglass

I wish I had a pair of your wings
So I could get out of my own damn way
And feel the momentum of this
But I am only one man

If love should heal it all
And all of this hurt should reconcile
I’ll know it was because you were there
If hope should reappear
And this weary dream should prove worthwhile
I’ll know it was because you were there
And I’m always steady in your care

So long hard climb
You’re just a memory in a photo frame
Set out beside me and my burning bedside
And you cast the water to the flames
You call my name
And I am never the same

If love should heal it all
And all of this hurt should reconcile
I’ll know it was because you were there
If hope should reappear
And this weary dream should prove worthwhile
I’ll know it was because you were there
And I’m always steady in your care

When I’m full of jealousy
When there's something wrong with me
I know you’ll be there
Any way you can
Any way you can

If love should heal it all
And all of this hurt should reconcile
I’ll know it was because you were there
If hope should reappear
And this weary dream should prove worthwhile
I’ll know it was because you were there
And I’m always steady in your care

Gregory Recommends - May, 2016

As an artist, I’m always researching to stay inspired. Inspiration is all around, and some of my best work comes from just taking it all in – conversations, live events, music, movies, television, and in books. Here are some things I’ve been inspired by lately.

Listen: Syd, Easy Magic

My good friend Syd (Erin “Syd” Sidney) is one of the most creative people I know. He continues to inspire me with his masterful approach to anything he touches and his latest solo efforts are no exception. It’s been awhile since Syd’s last EP release Upswing, but he’s had plenty of incredible collaborations with Hotels & Highways and with Mia Dyson in the interim. He’s putting himself back on the forefront again with his newest collection of originals called Easy Magic, which is available now for pre-order at http://onetruebandit.com/syd-easy-magic-preorder. And your support gets you the first three singles immediately – “Can I Call You,” “Across The Earth” and “One Good Reason.” I honestly can’t decide which one is the “standout” for me because they are all so moving, so I suspect that we all have a lot to look forward to with this album!

Watch: Cooked

I mentioned Cooked earlier in my Creative Transcendence: A Spiritual Take on The Creative Process article, but I felt it was worth recommending officially. Whether you're a foodie or not, this four-part Netflix Original documentary series is eye-opening on a number of levels. It certainly helped me put a lot into perspective, especially where some of my personal health issues are concerned. It also beautifully highlights the primal elements of our foods origin – “Fire,” “Water,” “Air” and “Earth” – and how our food has evolved over time. The series is based on Michael Pollan’s book Cooked, and it will certainly give you a lot to think about.

Elizabeth Gilbert is the author of Eat Pray Love, and Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear is her latest guide to living life out loud. Naturally, I love the emphasis on creativity, but it’s also full of everyday examples of real people and their choices around living intentionally. I love the story about her friend Susan who was a passionate figure skater as a girl but her fears convinced her to give it up when she entered the “real world.” Many years later, she got back out on the ice and felt a new sense of appreciation for the value of her own joy. She did not quit her day job or go on to compete professionally, she simply found her source of happiness again.

Dose of Inspiration

“...skating is still the best way for her to unfold a certain beauty and transcendence within her life that she cannot seem to access in any other manner. And she would like to spend as much time as possible in such a state of transcendence while she is still here on earth. That’s all. That’s what I call creative living.”

If this moves you in any way, I would encourage you to consider donating to Bernie Sander’s campaign if you haven’t yet already at: https://secure.berniesanders.com/page/contribute/contribute. I'm not shy about being a passionate Bernie supporter. I've been feeling the bern since I was young having grown up in Vermont watching his political career unfold. His track record speaks for itself, and his foresight is what I want in a president. I think most of us can agree that many big changes need to happen in our political system, and change has got to start somewhere. Bernie is the only candidate I’ve seen in my lifetime who represents concrete change for the future wellness of all. Of course, change doesn’t happen all at once, but it’s got to start somewhere. #feelthebern #berniesanders #berdiesanders #throwbackthursday

My Performance With Patty Griffin, Anais Mitchell & Sara Watkins (Article & Video)

Something remarkable happened on Saturday, April 2nd, as magic would have it. Glen and I had tickets to attend a show featuring Patty Griffin, Sara Watkins & Anais Mitchell – an amazing lineup of female singer/songwriters who have all been an inspiration to me at one point or another over the years, so I could hardly wait to see them altogether. It was the final show in their seven-week Use Your Voice tour in conjunction with the League of Women Voters. I knew we were in for a memorable evening, but I had no idea just how memorable it would become.

Patty Griffin’s music has been inspiring me since I first discovered her on tour with Shawn Colvin and Freedy Johnson back in 1997. I was a sophomore in high school and was able to talk some of my teachers into taking me to the show in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She was supporting her debut album Living With Ghosts, and while she was the newcomer on the scene that night, she commanded my attention with just an acoustic guitar and a powerhouse performance. Her voice, songwriting, and sheer passion ignited the audience and left a permanent impression on my musical psyche as a budding songwriter. It became my mad mission (pun fully intended) to meet her some day and share the stage in some capacity.

Sara Watkins has been an influential voice and fiddle player to me since her Nickle Creek days. I remember playing Nickel Creek, Patty Griffin, and Alison Krauss records in heavy rotation the year I worked in the music department at a Barnes and Noble in South Burlington, Vermont, just before I decided to hit the road as a full-time touring artist myself. It was a zenful way to “flip” CDs, which was management’s term for tidying and reorganizing the CDs back when CDs were still a hot commodity.

Anais Mitchell’s music has been influential since I first performed with her at The Montague Bookmill in Massachusetts in 2002. I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with her on many occasions throughout the years, and I’ve valued her friendship ever since. It’s been inspiring to watch her work evolve and flourish into opportunities beyond her wildest imagination, and she continues to give me hope as an artist with serious creative integrity.

So I decided to send an encouraging text to Anais just hours before the show I mentioned earlier, expressing my excitement to see her that night with the great Patty Griffin and Sara Watkins. She responded in a bit of a panic because she had caught whatever bug had been going around and was unable to sing her songs that night. I offered to step in if she needed an additional voice, and she asked if I could sing her song “Your Fonder Heart” in its original key. Apparently all three artists were performing in-the-round throughout the tour and collaborating with one another, so the original key was non-negotiable. The guitar player, David Pulkingham, had learned it in the original key, and both Patty and Sara had harmonies all ready to contribute, so she was in need of a lead vocalist for arguably the most popular song in her repertoire. After I picked my jaw up off the ground from the sudden realization that I would be singing with Patty Griffin and Sara Watkins while being accompanied by Anais Mitchell and David Pulkingham that evening in Los Angeles to a listening room of 1000+ people, I promptly accepted her offer to sing!

When Glen and I arrived at the theater, we were escorted backstage so that I would have a chance to run through the song quickly with Anais before the show. The dressing rooms lined a long white hallway, and each artist’s dressing room had their name prominently displayed on the door. I knocked on Anais’ door and she greeted me with a smile even though she was feeling so under the weather. She stepped out in the hallway with her guitar to run the song and take advantage of the beautiful natural reverb that surrounded us. I started singing, and halfway through the first verse, Patty Griffin, Sara Watkins, and David Pulkingham all emerged from their dressing rooms with smiles on their faces to see who was singing. They approached to join in on the choruses in four-part harmony, and it felt like we had all been singing together for years.

It was one of the most remarkable moments I have ever experienced in my humble career.

Anais was a puddle of tears by the end of the song. She was emotional from exhaustion and from the fact that her faithful tour was coming to a close that evening. She was also very grateful for my willingness to “save the day” so last minute, and I was so grateful for the opportunity. It was a beautiful moment between friends, and I loved what a genuine exchange we were both providing one another.

My cameo appearance was mid-set so I waited nervously stage left until it was time. It was surreal to be on the same stage with such legendary and influential artists, but I quickly switched from a nervous fan to a confident professional the moment I was called upon. I walked on stage to an eloquent introduction from Anais, grabbed the mic from the stand, and led the star-studded choir through Anais’ powerful song. There was a roar of applause from the audience, and I could hardly believe the magic that had occurred once I walked off the stage.

Glen and I watched the rest of the show from the audience, and I was beaming from head to toe. After the performance, I was greeted by so many enthusiastic concert-goers in the lobby asking who I was and where they could find my music. Fortunately, I always carry fliers in my back pocket just in case, and I’m so glad I did! Even the Executive Director of the show approached me to introduce himself and thank me for performing on his stage. He said I had sung his favorite Anais Mitchell song. He also admitted that he didn’t think anyone could do that song justice, but after hearing me sing it, he said I had proven otherwise. He even invited me to be his guest at a future performance, and I was deeply moved by the invitation.

We were welcomed backstage after the show to help celebrate the tour finale. There was a beautiful spread of food, chocolates and champagne, and a whole lotta love being exchanged. Anais thanked me again, and told me that my appearance was the highlight of the set for her that night. I told her what a gift it was to be involved, and how happy I was to help a sister out. She introduced me to some of her friends – many of whom were only a few degrees of separation from other people I know. It’s such a small world, and even smaller in the music community. It seems that no matter where I am in the world, there are always friends nearby.

I undeniably have music to thank for that.

Matt Fish was at the party – another cellist I had the opportunity to work with here in LA on the new album – because he used to be roommates with the guitar player, David Pulkingham. Carolyn Rosenfeld was there as well because she was managing the entire tour. Carolyn tour manages an incredible roster of legendary artists, and I first met her when I opened for Dar Williams many years ago. In fact, I have Carolyn to thank for recommending me to support Shawn Colvin on a string of shows awhile back. Needless to say, I felt the love from all angles.

Just as the party was dying down, I met eyes with Patty Griffin, who had been deep in group conversation up until then. She smiled and reached out her hand as to welcome my company. I sat down beside her as she took my hand, and she thanked me again for singing. She told me how beautiful she thought it was, and said she couldn’t wait to hear more of my music. Of course, I made sure to come prepared with a few extra hard copies of my new album, so I handed her an advance copy of My Hero, The Enemy. She thanked me and assured me that she still listens to actual CDs in her car! I told her how her music had inspired me ever since I first saw her on that Shawn Colvin and Freedy Johnston tour, and she told me that had been the longest tour since this Use Your Voice tour. It was all I could do to keep my cool as a longtime Patty Griffin fan. Little did she know that she was one of the most influential artists of my lifetime, and I wouldn’t write or sing the way I do without her distinct guidance.

Dreams came true that night. I felt like one of the sisterhood that evening, and I am so grateful.

Fortunately, Glen managed to film my entire performance with the sisterhood so that you can experience the magic as well (sorry for the poor sound quality though!). I’m still pinching myself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpgOfxhOA8w

May Spotlight: "Every Evening After" (Live Music Video & Single)

I’m releasing things a bit out of order, but I just completed the editing of the live music video for “Every Evening After” from the Live From The Chapel project. “Every Evening After” was the first single released from the new album My Hero, The Enemy back in December, and it was actually the first song performed at The Chapel because we played the entire new album in order. Now that you’re familiar with the song, it seems only fair to release the live performance video!

I love the blue, moody lighting happening in this one. It’s been a real treat to edit these videos myself because I get to see how the show looked from the audience's perspective. I had no idea how much incredible lighting was happening throughout from my on-stage perspective!

I also want to give a shout-out to Mike Tuccillo who is mixing and mastering the multi-track audio recordings of all these live performances for this project. They all sound as beautiful as they did when we performed them in the reverb-saturated walls of The Chapel, and I can’t wait to turn this project into a live album and live “rockumentary” concert film. Mike was also responsible for every bass part on the new album, as well as the final mixing and mastering, so he is no stranger to these songs. And of course, nothing would sound or look as good as it does without this incredible band, the show’s audio engineer, Nic Pope at Different Fur Studios, and the videographers at Lash Music Media.

Enjoy the video, and feel free to download the single directly from SoundCloud (below) if you haven't yet already!

Cheers,

Gregory

Music At Work - All I Want (Song Lyrics)

Music At Work offers an exclusive, ongoing sneak-peek into new songs on the horizon. All song titles and lyrics are subject to change, evolve, or disappear entirely over time, but I want to share some of the beginning stages of the creative process with you in real-time.

Here are lyrics from a new song in development with the working title “All I Want.” I built the foundation around a drum loop and a warm synth pad in Ableton Live, and I hear it being produced almost akin to a Depeche Mode or Cocteau Twins 80’s-esque power ballad.

All I Want
by Gregory Douglass

Treason, calling every angel
Rousing up a storm in my heaven
Vertigo from the window
Careful not to let go of my faith
And now it makes me wonder

Could I have been all I wanted?
Or could I be all I want?
Could I have been all I wanted?
Or could I be all I want?

All I want, all that purity that remains
All I want, all the rhythm inside my veins
All I want, all the purity that remains
All I want, all the rhythm inside, the rhythm inside

Oh, the life I’ve made
Who am I with what remains?
Silently we walk the plank in vain
Well I won’t take it anymore
There’s something better in store
There must be
But still it makes me wonder

Could I have been all I wanted?
Or could I be all I want?
Could I have been all I wanted?
Or could I be all I want?

All I want, all that purity that remains
All I want, all the rhythm inside my veins
All I want, all the purity that remains
All I want, all the rhythm inside, the rhythm inside

Gregory Recommends - April, 2016

As an artist, I’m always researching to stay inspired. Inspiration is all around, and it comes from just experiencing life – conversations, live events, music, movies, television, and in books. Here are some things I’ve been inspired by lately.

Listen: Nothing But Thieves

I have a good friend who introduces me to most of the new music I love these days, and the most recent find is an English band called Nothing But Thieves. Their latest self-titled album merges the legendary Jeff Buckley and the musings of the band Muse (pun fully intended), in my humble opinion. I could listen to the lead singer sing the phone book, as they say!

Watch: The Danish Girl

The Danish Girl is loosely based on the lives of Danish artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, and how a powerful relationship can strengthen and evolve through the hardest of times. Lili's character follows a heartbreakingly beautiful journey as a transgender pioneer in this period piece, and the cinematography is as stunning as the fluid-nature of Lili’s transformation.

Read: The Desire Map

I’ve been a huge Danielle LaPorte fan for many years now, though she’s hard for me to explain in a nutshell. She’s an author, thought-leader and spiritual guru with one of the wisest souls I can think of in the age of information. Her book The Desire Map helped me reexamine my priorities based on the things I desire most in life, and it offers a radical approach enveloped in poetic wisdom. I highly recommend all of her offerings.

Dose of Inspiration

Glen and I ran into our neighbor recently on our way out for the evening. I asked him how he was, and he replied, "Life is amazing." I said "Wow, I like that. I haven't had an amazing day myself, but I'm gonna plant your words into my psyche and see if they bloom this week!" We continued out the door, and with kind eyes he said, "Have a good night."

I don't know much about him, but I do know that he's a musician himself who composes choral music. I'd love to learn more about him actually. We've only chatted a couple times before, but I gave him a CD a few months ago when I learned that we both had music in common.

When we returned later that night, this yellow sticky was on my door.

"That's what we storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again."

The note made me teary actually, and I didn't realize how much I needed that reminder. Thanks, neighbor.

So I think I'll keep on telling stories, restoring order with imagination, and instilling hope again and again and again. And as for all the rest of you creative connoisseurs, hobbyists, and professionals reading this – I hope you keep on, too.

Once again, you get to see it here first before the rest of the world does. I love this song because it gathers together so many things I hold dear.

“Enough With This” is another one of those sacred songs, and it was the first opportunity I had on the album to compose and arrange parts for other players to help bring the sweeping instrumentation in my head to life. I wanted the recording to be lush and orchestral on this song, but nothing that would take away from the solemn and humbling nature of it. I thought viola, cello, and clarinet would be a stirring fit for the underlying syncopation of marimba and piano throughout – bittersweet, eloquent and evocative. And it’s always a privilege to include my mom Glory Douglass Reinstein on clarinet – her first musical love.

This was also one of my favorite songs to include Lisa Piccirillo’s incredible vocals on. She’s my musical spirit animal in so many ways. She has an uncanny way of matching every nuance of my vocals with ease, and her harmonies and powerfully emotional voice make these choruses all the more beautiful and memorable.

But first, here's the original recording from new album, My Hero, The Enemy:

Music At Work - Don’t Give Up (Song Lyrics)

Music At Work offers an exclusive, ongoing sneak-peek into new songs on the horizon. All song titles and lyrics are subject to change, evolve, or disappear entirely over time, but I want to share some of the beginning stages of the creative process with you in real-time.

Here are lyrics from a brand new song with the working title “Don’t Give Up.” It’s a soulful little power-ballad, akin to “Better Tomorrow” from my 2005 Stark album in my mind, and it might even call for a another choir in the background once it’s recorded.

Don’t Give Up
by Gregory Douglass

You said you need some courage
You said you need a cure
You said you need hand
So close but so far
When you call upon desire
Your love and truth align
You are a better man
It’s alright, it’s all leveling

Take a look at what you’re made of
This is who you are
This is who you are
It’s nothing more than you can handle
This is who you are
This is who you are

Don’t give up on yourself so easily
Don’t give into sorrow more than you need
Don’t just wait till it’s too late
Don’t give up, don’t give up

They’ve got you living for tomorrow
But you’ve only got today
So what’s it gonna be?
It’s not hard
It’s all up to your will to wake the wild
The call that beacons the child
From deep within the man
It’s alright, it’s all leveling

Take a look at what you’re made of
This is who you are
This is who you are
It’s nothing more than you can handle
This is who you are
This is who you are

So don’t give up on yourself so easily
Don’t give into sorrow more than you need
Don’t just wait till it’s too late
Don’t give up, don’t give up

Gregory Recommends - March, 2016

As an artist, I’m always researching to stay inspired. Inspiration is all around, and it comes from just experiencing life – conversations, live events, music, movies, television, and in books. Here are some things I’ve been inspired by lately.

Listen: Jesca Hoop

I’ve been a big fan of Jesca Hoop’s work for several years now. If you haven’t heard her yet, prepare for a bewitching. I am particularly fond of her 2009 album Hunting My Dress. Her song “The Kingdom” is perhaps one of the most profound songs I’ve heard in years. She’s about to release an album of duets called Love Letter For Fire with Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), so that’s something to look forward to!

Watch: Sleeping with Other People

Sleeping with Other People stars Alison Brie and SNL Alum, Jason Sudeikis, and it recently hit the iTunes new releases for rentals. Glen and I were in the mood for a good “chick flick” the other night, and this one exceeded my expectations. It was pleasantly surprising in its storyline, candor, and wit, and was a great account of how unglamorous love can be at the beginning of a relationship.

Learn: The Creative Habit

The Creative Habit is a forthright narrative by one of the world’s leading choreographers, Twyla Tharp. It’s her blueprint to creative productivity, and she argues that “All it takes to make creativity a part of your life is the willingness to make it a habit.” I highly recommend this read for every working or aspiring artist, but the rules can really apply to anyone yearning for accountability in their personal or professional lives!

In Case You Missed It - February, 2016 Social Recap

If you’re already a part of my monthly “Song of the Month Club” then you’re already receiving a free download every month and keeping tabs on recent news. If not, here’s what you missed…

It's been awhile since I've mashed some songs up, and this one I couldn’t resist :) The combination came to me in the shower – where all good ideas happen. First off, I am admittedly a Justin Bieber fan after hearing his new album. The production is amazing, and so are quite a few of the songs. His radio single ‘Sorry’ is easy to get stuck in one’s head, and as I was humming it for the millionth time recently, I realized what a seamless transition into Ariana Grande & The Weeknd’s ‘Love Me Harder’ it is. Then that combination almost immediately reminded me of my own song ‘Wait For Me’. Done, done and done! Lyrically speaking, I love it because it’s like a back and forth dialogue between the partner who is trying to apologize and the partner who needs more from the relationship. This also marks the first occasion that I’ve included my own song in a mashup, and now I’m like “duh, why didn’t I think to do that sooner?” Needless to say, I can’t wait to do it again soon ;)

March Spotlight: “Point of View” Live From The Chapel (Video)
Photos by Natalie Williams

New Year’s Eve brought a whole new sense of purpose into my creative world this year. I hit the Flynn Center Main Stage in Burlington, Vermont on December 31, 2015 for a headlining performance at First Night Burlington with the Gregory Douglass Band, and it was a dream come true actually.

I was born and raised in rural Vermont and I grew up attending so many concerts at The Flynn in the big city of Burlington. The Flynn has always been a pillar of the arts in Vermont, so it’s always held a special place in my heart.

I remember seeing Tori Amos there on her Under The Pink tour when I was in middle school. It was just her and her piano, and she helped me understand what I wanted to do with my life. She essentially taught me how to play the piano and how to craft songs that took the listener on an emotional journey.

I’ve seen so many of my heros come through The Flynn, including Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, Alison Krauss, Kronos Quartet, Neko Case, October Project, and on and on. The Flynn was a huge part of my formative years and has always been a benchmark for my performance aspirations. It was a true honor to finally perform on the same stage that so many of my inspirations stood on before me, and the same stage that inspired me to pursue music in the first place.

Throughout most of my touring years, I have performed solo acoustic or as a duo/trio configuration because it was far more financially feasible than touring with a band. In hindsight, that was a rough road to travel because I survived as something of a “black sheep” in the singer/songwriter community. I was performing mostly at listening rooms but many listening rooms are coveted by the folk community, and I simply didn’t “belong” in the folk community. Bookers and concert promoters never really knew what to do with me, and I was often paired with artists I wasn’t the right fit for.

I was swimming upstream.

The rare opportunities I’ve had to perform with a full band over the years might have caught my attention more carefully, but I continued fighting against the current for sustainability's sake. There wasn’t much enticing me to make a band a priority from a logistical standpoint, and I wasn’t willing to acknowledge how much that might be hindering my live performances overall.

The New Year’s Eve Flynn show was followed by an unforgettable show at The Chapel in San Francisco on January 10, 2016 – the official east coast and west coast pre-release shows for My Hero, The Enemy. The new album is so massive in production that I wanted to present both of these shows with a full band as a “live album” performance, and in the same order as the album. I wanted the shows to be extra-special and highly memorable for folks to experience, so with the help of team support, I went all-out for them both.

There were no corners cut in the planning process, and it made all of the difference. It allowed me to take a “quality over quantity” approach in comparison to my years spent as a “road hound” throughout my twenties – always trying to conquer the world with ambitious goals like “25 shows in 30 days,” and harboring a semi-masochistic sense of pride by attaining such lofty ambition.

Presenting two quality pre-release shows was all I wanted to celebrate the new album in style. It was an incredibly refreshing way to manage all that was required to make each event the best it could be. I was able to put all of my energy, resources, promotional efforts, and heart towards two shows instead of stretching myself thin to poorly promote a string of 25 shows in a row and exhausting myself to pull them off. It made all of the difference from execution to completion.

I received so much praise from the audience in the aftermath of each performance. From their perspective, I think they got to experience a Gregory Douglass performance that was more fully realized than ever before – with a full band, exceptional sound, incredible lighting, and a remarkable venue to boot. I think it’s safe to say that both shows were truly epic and just as memorable for the audience as they were for the band.

This “quality over quantity” approach has spilled over into my permanent psyche now. It’s something I’d like to apply to all my performances moving forward. I certainly love performing solo as much as I do with a band, but there’s no doubt in my mind now that every performance has to be the best it can be moving forward. This will call for a big shift in my touring plans from what they once were, and touring will likely happen less often, but I am going to make sure that any future show will offer an equally memorable experience for everyone involved.

I’m thrilled to have video documentation of The Chapel performance in San Francisco, and I’ll be releasing new videos from that show through Patreon so you can be the first to see them. I’m so excited to be editing all this footage myself to dictate the rhythm of each live music video, and the footage is amazing! Shout-out to EBH Presents and the Lash Music Media team for capturing this incredible footage. It’s going to take some time to finalize each song so I’ll plan to release these monthly right here in the Gzine.

In honor of the second single this month, here’s “Point of View” – the first live music video from the Live From The Chapel project. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did that grand January evening!

First Two Singles from My Hero, The Enemy (Audio)

My Hero, The Enemy - A Road Album
Photos by Natalie Williams
I believe my new album My Hero, The Enemy is a “road album” at heart. I suspect that it will have the most impact to the listener while in transit. Many of the songs were conceived from the road and inspired by personal thoughts and epiphanies while on tour. As such, I wanted the listener to feel the pulse of the road in songs like “Every Evening After” and “Enough With This,” and to feel the turmoil of the road during blizzard-like conditions in the song “Point of View.”

I love the road for its persistent opportunity to contemplate and self-reflect. When you’re driving alone in a car, you can feel the expansive nature of the universe surrounding you. And if you’re listening to the right music, it can even summon thoughts of how you desire to coexist in the world. It can even be a reminder of how quickly time and place can escape you. The road has a way of forcing you inward and sparking revelation.

It sparked so much revelation with me over the past few years, and that’s what really drove (pun fully intended) this album forward. This is a deeply introspective body of work documenting so much rumination from the road, so I think the road will be the ultimate way for listeners to experience it.

Listen to it alone.

Listen to it loudly and uninterrupted.

The sonic production of My Hero, The Enemy is by far the biggest sounding album I’ve ever recorded, and it sets a new bar all around I think. I’m still beaming with gratitude from all the incredibly talented people I got to work with throughout the production of this album – all of whom are fellow indie musicians, and some you’ve probably never heard of until now. There are rich blankets of Jane Boxall’s marimba throughout, beautiful and layered walls of Ben Cassorla’s guitars, blankets of Monique Citro and Matt Fish’s sweeping cello and Leah Katz’ viola, beautifully solemn swells of Glory Douglass Reinstein’s clarinet, soaring and emotionally-charged vocals from Lisa Piccirillo and Myra Flynn, insanely sophisticated bass parts from Mike Tuccillo, and epic drums and percussion from Matt Bogdanow that resonate to the core. And for those of you who don’t already know, Matt Bogdanow was my co-producer every step of the way on this project, and Mike Tuccillo was also responsible for the incredible final mixing and mastering of this album.

I can’t tell you how honored I am to have worked with this team.

And of course, there’s plenty of diverse Gregory Douglass songwriting, piano odysseys, and layered harmonies in their signature manner.

Here’s a beautiful blurb about the album from my new artist biography, written by my manager, Sarah Stickle:

My Hero, The Enemy is his most prolific work to date with writing born after the emotional collapse of 15 years as a touring artist. Realizing that what he once called a “fierce independence,” Douglass recognized as isolating and self-limiting choices. Amid this epiphany, Douglass found a glimmer of hope in new collaborations and some of his best writing yet to propel his music yet another step further in the world.

“This new album is the most deeply personal account of my years in music so far,” says Douglass. “It’s also an ode to being a creative person in the age of information, and what a blessing and a curse it can be. At the same time, I would argue that every song on My Hero, The Enemy explores the dichotomy of such emotional struggles, and attempts to expose the underlying truth behind many of life's misconceptions.”

While My Hero, The Enemy showcases the emotional turmoil of creativity, it also keeps Douglass’ relentless hope and happiness in his life alive.

First Two Singles from My Hero, The Enemy

*Click image below to download "Every Evening After" single!

The first track on the album “Every Evening After” was the first single released back in December 11, 2015, and it has already debuted on radio stations around the country from WNCS in Montpelier, Vermont to KCSN in Los Angeles, California, thanks to the support of our favorite radio promoter, Glory Douglass Reinstein. I also shared a show with my friend CeyJay Jumao-as recently here in L.A. and he surprised me and the rest of the audience with his own rendition of “Every Evening After” at the tail of one of his own songs! Needless to say, the first single has been well-received so far.

I wanted “Every Evening After” to be the debut because it really sets the stage for the rest of the album. There’s always a natural theme to each album after a long span of songwriting, but a theme usually doesn’t come to fruition until there are enough songs to make the theme become quite clear. “Every Evening After” is the most forthright in the overarching theme of this album, so I wanted it to be the world premiere.

The launch of this Patreon campaign (March 1, 2016) also marks the launch of the second single from the album. It’s called “Point of View” and it was one of my favorite songs to bring to life in the studio.

This song outlines the beginning of a Midwest tour I set out for in the dead of winter one blistery-cold January. I was driving on the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) in upstate New York, and it was my mission to get from my home in Burlington, Vermont to as close to Cleveland, Ohio as I could get.

My first show of the tour was the very next day – an afternoon college gig – and it was going to pay for nearly the entire tour. Missing the show because of bad weather was not an option for me because my livelihood depended upon it, so I set out on what ended up being one of the most dangerous snow storms I’ve ever driven through.

*Click image below to download "Point of View" single!

The road conditions were manageable when I first set out on the back routes of Vermont and into New York, but things quickly got worse after I entered the Thruway and headed west. There was hardly anyone on the road but me and a few Interstate plow trucks. Snow was piled high from the plows but it wasn’t helping much. The blizzard was too much for the plows to handle.

The roads were layered in black ice as well, and they kept me from exceeding 25 miles per hour. I was alone and afraid, but I was determined to make progress. I witnessed one car after another off the road in the snow-piled ditches on each side of the Interstate and in both directions. I must have seen 10-15 cars off the road within the hour I entered the Thruway, and I wasn’t making any progress.

I was hardly to Syracuse, New York by the time the severity of the driving conditions finally hit on me. “What the fuck am I doing?” I thought to myself. “I’m going to kill myself out here!”

There was so much revelation in that moment. So much needed to change.

I burst into tears, and I finally surrendered to the storm. I pulled over in a baron, upstate New York small town, with whiteout conditions, and I prayed for shelter. I finally came upon an old Motel with vacancy to spare, and I checked into a room. It was the kind of place I would never stay at in a million years, but that night, it may have saved me from myself. It felt like someone was watching over me that night, like a guardian angel. I suppose in this case, it was guardian shelter from the storm.
